Concrete cellars: what to know before choosing
A concrete or reinforced-concrete cellar is the traditional solution — an underground room cast on site or built from blocks for storing produce. It is massive and long-lived, but it requires construction works, mandatory waterproofing and several weeks of time. We do not build concrete cellars — we supply ready-made polyethylene, HDPE and composite cellars installed on site in a single day. On this page we compare both paths honestly.

Pros and cons of a concrete cellar
Pros
- Massive, load-bearing structure
- Fully custom shape and size
- Built correctly, it lasts very long
Cons
- Requires construction works, machinery and several weeks
- Waterproofing is mandatory — concrete absorbs moisture and cracks without it
- Total cost is hard to predict: materials, labour and waterproofing add up
Concrete cellar vs ready-made cellar
| Concrete cellar | Ready-made cellar | |
|---|---|---|
| Construction time | Several weeks — digging, casting, curing | 1 day on site |
| Waterproofing | Mandatory | Not needed — the body is hermetic |
| Moisture and cracking | Concrete absorbs moisture and can crack over time | The body does not rust or absorb moisture |
| Price | Depends on the scope of works — hard to plan precisely | Cellar price known upfront (from €2,348); installation quoted after a survey |
When is a concrete cellar still the right choice?
If the cellar is part of a new-build project under the house, or a fully custom geometry is needed, a cast solution can make sense — designed and built together with the building. In other cases a ready-made cellar is faster, more predictable and free of hidden costs.
Ready-made cellars as the alternative
Polyethylene cellars
the most popular choice, from €2,348
HDPE polyethylene cellars
thicker walls, from €4,540
Composite Eco cellars
light and durable, from €8,228

Frequently asked questions
How much does building a concrete cellar cost?
The total is made up of excavation, concrete or blocks, reinforcement, waterproofing and labour, so it differs per site and is hard to quote upfront. For comparison — a ready-made cellar has a known price from the start (from €2,348), and installation costs are calculated after a site survey.
Does a concrete cellar need waterproofing?
Yes, always. Concrete absorbs moisture — without quality waterproofing, condensation forms and the structure cracks over time. Polyethylene and composite bodies need no separate waterproofing.
How does a ready-made cellar differ from a concrete one?
A ready-made cellar is factory-built with a hermetic body; on site it only needs to be buried and connected to ventilation — installation takes one day. A concrete cellar is built on site over several weeks and requires waterproofing and construction works.
